Training Update: As said in the beginning of the week, it was a rough start mentally and physically. But with the help of a great coach and support system, the wearisome beginning turned into a fruitful finishing. Once again the bar went up and a clearance of 3.65m (12 feet) prevailed. And something bigger and better was added into the equation: A 14 foot pole! After we went through the 13′ 160 on the 12 foot clearance we thought it was time to test the waters on a longer pole. I was able to get safely into the pit, and am really looking forward to having some jump sessions on it this week!
Now onto the best part of the post…
This weekend was the high school Central Valley Track Championships and our Clovis East kids tore up the track! We had some awesome fight-to-the-end finishes and 6 qualifiers to our California State Meet in two weeks. My favorite moment of the meet came at the very end. It was closing in on 9pm and the men’s 4×400 had just finished, the only event left was the women’s high jump. With 5 girls over 5′ 3″ (1.60m) the bar moved up to 5′ 5″ (1.65). My girl Machiah was the final jumper in the jumping order. First attempts came and went with no clearances. Second attempts followed in suit. We were down to the final attempts, and with the first four girls unable to clear the bar it came down to Machiah: if she missed she would be 4th and one place out of qualifying for the state meet, if she cleared she would qualify and be the valley champion as a freshman! She went up and soared over the bar and as she kicked her heels solidifying her clearance our team erupted in screams! Mine by far being the loudest! I was so proud! Tears came to my eyes, and it was an amazing moment to experience as a coach. I feel so truly blessed to experience the triumphs and defeats from both sides now, and appreciate every effort and energy my coaches spend on me as an athlete. This is why I love athletics!
